Sri Lanka is seeing such an alarming increase in the number of patients with
Chronic Kidney Disease that State Healthcare is finding it impossible to keep
pace. Over the last decade, a new form of kidney disease of unknown aetiology
has emerged in the Dry Zone of Sri Lanka. The occurrence is mainly amongst males
of age group 40 – 60 engaged in agriculture. Almost 80% of these patients
eventually die from Kidney Failure within the first two years after diagnosis.
Many of these poor farmers die simply because they cannot afford the cost of
treatment.
This grave situation calls for mobilization of public support for fund raising activities as the morbidity and mortality of these patients are often related to their state of poverty. Awareness programs regarding prevention, screening programs for early diagnosis, provision of financial and other support for needy patients, improvement of infrastructure and promotion of kidney donations for transplant have to be carried out in a well organized manner.
The Kandy Kidney Protection Society is a voluntary organization that was formed in an endeavour to fulfil these needs.
